¡Hola, Nevadenses!
Below you’ll find a few things to do this week and into the weekend, but wanted to highlight an event happening today, Monday, May 19 (perhaps even as you’re this newsletter.)
The Southern Nevada Health District is holding a community baby shower from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the East Las Vegas Community Center (250 N. Eastern Ave). for expecting mothers — especially those facing financial burdens or have limited healthcare access.
This free event offers a diaper giveaway, educational booths with helpful resources, games and prizes for pregnant participants, information on prenatal care, parenting and community programs.
Share this with someone who might need this information, or if you feel compelled, donate to a diaper bank to help some moms out! It takes a village.
Have a great Monday!

I was recently searching for a gift for a friend and remembered that we had this guide of Latino-owned jewelry stores. The guide came in extremely handy, especially the shops on Etsy — including PintosBoutique702, Axels Tiendita, and HappyTikis.
I got the perfect gift I’m sure my friend will love and the fulfillment of supporting a local business.
Not mentioned on the list but also worth checking out: Hey Beautiful Jewelry.
Do you have a favorite local small business that you’d like to see featured?

A recent Pew Research Center survey showed that 42% of Latinos worry that they or someone close to them could be deported.
Read about how Luisa* and her coworkers have built a support system to keep each other in the know and prepared in case their biggest fear — Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) approaching them and their families — comes true.
“‘Did you hear about what happened in Carson City?’” Luisa says, relaying the story of a friend. “‘My husband’s supervisor told him to go home because they said ICE was there doing inspections.’”
“We talk about this every morning, at lunch breaks, and even after work, and I tell them I am tired of talking about this because it breaks my heart, and it’s so hard to have this ongoing anxiety,” Luisa says.

Southern Nevada mosquito population explosion raises disease concerns. “Many longtime locals remember when mosquitoes weren’t a problem in Las Vegas, but that has changed dramatically, especially with the spread of a breed called Aedes aegypti. UNLV public health experts have launched a new survey to gauge community concerns and determine if residents would support creating a valley-wide mosquito control program.” (Via KTNV)

Student farmers market returns to Nevada Legislature. “The third annual Green Our Planet’s Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market was held Thursday in front of the Nevada Legislature, with students cheering as transactions were completed. ‘For these guys being in a rural school, they don’t always get the opportunity to engage with a bigger community,’ Harvey said.” (Via The Record-Courier)
