Immigrant advocacy groups faced repeated procedural barriers during last month’s Special Legislative Session when proposing measures banning law enforcement from hiding their identity, restricting state agencies from sharing data with federal authorities solely for immigration investigation, and adding designations where a judicial warrant would be required for ICE enforcement.
What happened: Gov. Joe Lombardo’s crime package, which he signed into law, includes limitations to ICE’s presence in schools—requiring a judicial warrant—and increased transparency for immigration detainees in state or local facilities. But the Nevada Immigration Coalition also wanted the bill to include churches, courts, hospitals, and day care centers.
Critics said the session largely favored symbolic gestures over meaningful change for immigrants.
Why it matters: Nevada’s immigrant population is large and essential to the state’s economy. They also make up a sizable share of key industries: 36% of construction workers and 32% of hospitality jobs statewide, according to the American Immigration Council. In 2023, the group paid $5.7 billion in taxes and contributed $1.7 billion in rent.

New federal requirements could push close to 1,000 Nevadans into homelessness, analysis finds: “Under the new rule, no more than 30% of federal grants received by jurisdictions from the program can go toward funding permanent housing. Nevada could lose an estimated $13 million in funding. Both Clark and Washoe counties dedicate close to 90% of its federal Continuum of Care funding toward permanent housing, the NAEH found.” (Nevada Current)

Health district launches illness data portal before annual flu and RSV spikes: “Regional statistics show that the next two weeks are historically when flu and RSV hospitalizations peak in Las Vegas. That’s according to the Southern Nevada Health District’s new Respiratory Disease Dashboard, which launched in mid-November. Along with hospitalization rates, it also tracks fatality numbers and vaccine uptake for RSV, flu, and COVID.” (KNPR)
