In celebration of wrapping up this year and in hopes of spreading kindness and positivity in 2026, here are some of the Silver State’s most heartwarming news stories of 2025.
Some highlights:
1. Though the Summerlin South Little League team ultimately fell to the Asia-Pacific region’s Chinese Taipei team, the boys returned to Las Vegas with their heads held high as U.S. champions—a historic achievement for a local team.
2. Somos Votantes Education Fund canceled $133 million in medical debt for 128,000 people in Washoe and Clark counties through its new program, Seeds of Relief, a collaboration with the nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt.
3. Residents of the Historic Westside neighborhood in Las Vegas welcomed a sprawling, revitalized public library on Dec. 9. The 41,178-square-foot property on N. Martin Luther King Boulevard has tons of books, a recording studio, an event center for live arts, cultural, and heritage-based performances, an innovation lab with 3D printers, a business center, a computer center, and private study rooms.

The city of Las Vegas received around $5 million in federal funding to provide drought-tolerant free trees to residents in the 89101, 89102, 89104, 89106, 89107, and 89110 ZIP codes to help lower urban temperatures.
If you live in one of those eligible zip codes, you can fill out a form at the following link to receive a free tree, with irrigation, for your home. The form requires you to provide basic information such as your name, address, phone number, and email address.
The USDA’s website notes that property owners are required to sign the form to clarify eligibility. For renters, the instructions note: “If you are renting your home, and would like a tree, send this application form to your landlord as they must sign, granting permission for a tree to be planted on their property.”

32 protesters arrested outside Northern Nevada Starbucks facility: “The 32 protesters were arrested on suspicion of trespassing after police said they refused to leave the property. Calling it the Red Cup Rebellion, the union says its strike has grown to 3,800 baristas at more than 180 stores and that workers are protesting Starbucks’ alleged union-busting efforts and ‘failure to finalize a fair union contract.’” (Reno Gazette Journal)

Feds close to releasing draft environmental review of Colorado River management options: “Negotiations between federal officials and the seven western states that rely on the Colorado River have largely remained behind closed doors since 2023, but any new operating rules will be required to go through a public environmental review process before a final decision can be made.” (Nevada Current)
