Good morning, Nevadans!
In a conversation with a friend this weekend, the term Jell-O Belt came up, something that includes Las Vegas, Utah and parts of Northern Arizona. I had to learn more, and I found this fascinating conversation by Phoenix’s NPR station, KJZZ.
And yes, it has some relation to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it goes deeper than that—marketing, culture, gender norms, and prejudices.
Here’s one part that piqued my interest (but I recommend listening to/reading the whole thing): “There is this really strong association when people talk about Jell-O in Utah, to use it as a slur almost. So, it’s this moment of taking a food and mobilizing all of the food’s connotations with childhood or with femininity to describe an entire people.”
That got me thinking about the stories we inherit, the ones we question, and the ones that reveal more than they seem to at first glance. What’s your take?

“Saw this beautiful Utah Juniper Tree on the way up Mt. Charleston Scenic Drive,” Gail wrote. Thank you for sharing!
