I’ve been tending to my plants to make sure the heat doesn’t scorch them, and I found a little praying mantis in my lime tree. I see it as a sign of good luck and that my plants are well taken care of—by the insect and me.

World Cup fever is still going strong following Spain’s extra-time victory over Argentina in July, and Nevadans aren’t immune.

If the electric and unifying atmosphere of this high-stakes championship has you itching for more soccer action, you’re in luck. Not only do we have our own professional soccer team, the Las Vegas Lights FC, but we’re also home to several adult soccer leagues, so you don’t have to watch from the sidelines. 

Here are some Nevada soccer leagues you can join in Las Vegas and Reno.

The University Police Department Southern Command, which oversees UNLV, College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, and Nevada State University, decided not to pursue the partnership, a UNLV spokesperson told The Nevadan.

The University Police Department Northern Command—which serves the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College, Great Basin College and Western Nevada College—initiated the process to purchase six Flock Safety cameras.

According to the application document, Chief Eric James requested nearly $32,000 from the State of Nevada Emergency Response Commission’s (SERC) United We Stand grant. 

Despite the approval, James told The Nevadan they did not go through with the purchase, and instead, bought 13 Avigilon cameras. Avigilon is a Motorola Solutions company that specializes in artificial intelligence analytics. 

James added the Flock cameras ended up being “too expensive” due to a renewed annual cost. The Northern Command would have to pay the $32,000 every year for the equipment and software.

“Bureau of Reclamation crews are continuing work to address an equipment issue with the dam’s cableway system, which federal officials cited Tuesday as the reason for the closure … The 150-ton cableway system near the dam’s parking garage moves large equipment and other materials across the Colorado River between the Nevada and Arizona sides of the power plant, according to bureau officials.”

🟣 Activists renew call to end BLM helicopter roundups following 11 horse deaths. Nevada Current

“The goal was to capture approximately 2,000 wild horses and transport them to long-term holding facilities, never to be released back into the wild, according to the BLM. Return to Freedom, a wild horse conservation group, reported that the cause of the fatalities included a head injury, a broken neck, a broken leg, and horses put down for ‘chronic’ conditions. Three of the fatalities are currently undiagnosed.”

🟣 Scientists expand Colorado River evaporation monitoring as water shortages persist. KUNR

“Researchers say improving evaporation estimates could give water managers better information as they make difficult decisions about the future of the Colorado River, where years of drought, warming temperatures and heavy demand have strained water supplies.”
