I know that many law enforcement agencies have made headlines in different media outlets for all the wrong reasons. All too often we hear about everything that is going wrong and not enough about everything brave officers are doing to keep our communities safe. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to learn more about LVMPD’s Sheriff Kevin McMahill’s vision to ensure that all communities are engaged. He wants to make sure everyone trusts our LVMPD officers’ willingness to assist, especially in a time of crisis.  This is why the LVMPD’s Hispanic Alliance was born. Make sure you save the date for their upcoming “Cabalgata” event in our community this Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at Horseman’s Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

During the Hispanic Alliance meeting this past Tuesday, Jeremy Aguero, a principal analyst with Applied Analysis, shared the importance of numbers as they pertain to the Hispanic community. He shared that of the 2.35 million people who call southern Nevada home, 779,000 people are Latino; making 33% of the total population. He also stated that we all must recognize that the success of southern Nevada’s strong hospitality and tourist-focused economy was going strong in large part due to the Latino workforce. Aguero pointed out that 54% of the Culinary Union’s membership is Hispanic and the future will only be brighter as more Latinos continue to train for other workforce opportunities such as healthcare and other public sector jobs. ¿Qué les parece?

El Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció que el lunes, 29 de enero de 2024 iniciará la temporada de impuestos de 2024. Frank Canales recomienda a las personas que acudan con una persona bien establecida que les ayude a llenar su declaración de impuestos con profundo conocimiento del tema. “Nosotros estamos abiertos todo el año, ofrecemos garantía de que podemos ayudarles en caso de que se suscite un problema con el IRS, hay oficinas que abren en esta temporada y luego cierran, muchas veces fallan y dejan a la gente tirada”, dijo.

• Lanza United Way of Southern Nevada subvenciones de impacto comunitario y las solicitudes ya están abiertas para organizaciones locales sin fines de lucro. United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) está iniciando el nuevo año abriendo solicitudes para su programa anual de Subvenciones de Impacto Comunitario. El programa destina los fondos comunitarios en esfuerzos caritativos para organizaciones que tengan impacto en el sur de Nevada. (Lea más aquí)

• The CCSD releases video of officer encounter with Durango High School students. “You want next?” “Come at me again.” “You’re gonna be the next one in cuffs.” That’s what Clark County School District Police Department Lt. Jason Elfberg can be heard saying to students in newly-released body camera footage of a February 2023 incident where students filmed an altercation involving Elfberg outside Durango High School. • Biden vows to restore nationwide abortion rights in second term. The Biden campaign has made it clear that abortion rights will be at the forefront of its campaign. A new campaign ad released earlier this week features an OBGYN discussing how she had to travel out of state to receive an abortion due to Texas’ ultra-strict ban which prohibits abortion in almost all circumstances. (Read more here)
