We’re a month out from the midterm election early voting period (Oct. 17-30)! I feel like I spent all summer waiting for election season to kick off, and here we are—political ad after political ad on my TV.

Today’s Your Nevada is from yours truly. I recently took a quick road trip with my husband to Elko for the first time (more on that experience below) and just had to share these shots from the drive. We passed by Pahranagat Valley, another of Nevada’s best-kept secrets—it’s a true oasis in the middle of the desert.
Its name comes from the Paiute language, and it can mean “feet sticking in water.” The Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is a reminder of what Southern Nevada once looked like thousands of years ago with lakes and marshes.
Three local springs fill the valley’s lakes, which offer habitats for thousands of migratory birds, numerous birds of prey, deer, reptiles, small mammals, rare fish, and irrigation that farmers have used since the mid-nineteenth century.

Nevadans who receive Social Security should expect slightly larger payments in 2027, according to the latest forecast by The Senior Citizens League and AARP based on Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
The COLA—a yearly benefit change to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments—aims to counteract inflation so recipients don’t lose their buying power.
The 2027 COLA forecast is 3.5%. If that forecast holds, the average Social Security check for retired workers would increase by $67.90, from $1,940 to $2,007.
The official COLA increase for Social Security payments in 2027 will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Jannelle Tries: 24 hours in Elko

Do we have any readers from Elko? I had never been. Never even driven through the eastern side of the state. But I finally had the opportunity—more so, the excuse—to visit.
The six-and-a-half hour drive wasn’t too bad. Just make sure you stop in Ely to stretch your legs and pump gas. The drive felt like a normal Nevada road trip, lots of desert, a couple scattered towns, cows, ranches, and agriculture, but maybe a little lonely—on the drive to Reno you often see several other cars, however on this trip we spent many stretches being the only ones on the road.
Passing by Great Basin National Park made me even more eager to plan a camping trip there. Maybe by next summer, fingers crossed!
Elko itself surprised me. All my preconceived notions were proven wrong. The town was lively, friendly, full of art, and the food was great. We were only there for 24 hours, but I’d definitely come back to see and try more places. I feel bad admitting I was expecting a small, sleepy town.
My favorite part? Stargazing in Lamoille Canyon. You just have to see it in person. The phone camera only captures a fraction of the vastness. I finally understood why stargazing tourism is a thing!
My husband’s favorite part? He said the chorizo burrito he had for breakfast at McAdoo’s was the second best he has had in his life. That means a lot coming from him—he’s not picky, he’ll eat almost anything, but has very high standards.
