Nevada skywatchers, what’s left on the agenda for 2026?
No eclipses for us, unfortunately. We’re about two decades away from seeing a solar eclipse in our neighborhood (Aug. 12, 2045. Clear your calendars).
But we can expect four more meteor showers and two “supermoons,” and a pair of launches from southern California in the next few days, which may be visible in northwestern Nevada.

Gen Z Activist Deja Foxx moderates The Nevadan’s “On the Ballot” forum with Attorney General Aaron Ford and Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Las Vegas) on Oct. 23. Photo by Ian Maule.

Last Friday we held an event with Nevada gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford and Rep. Steven Horsford ahead of the Nov. 3 election (early voting is already underway!). If you missed it, you can catch the livestream recording on YouTube.
Gen Z activist Deja Foxx, who moderated the conversation, said there’s “a lot of dissatisfaction and cynicism” with both major parties, a sentiment she shares. She asked Ford how young people are supposed to cast a ballot if they feel their elected officials aren’t representing them.
“I’ll begin by saying and acknowledging that my generation has failed you,” Ford said. “You have less rights now than you did when your parents were born.”
Ford said Gen Z has the right to be upset with both parties and that elected officials should “duly acknowledge” that skepticism.

🟣 Conservation group sues feds for failing to protect rare Nevada toad and fish. Nevada Current
“According to the petitions, both the rare toad and fish are threatened with extinction due to groundwater pumping from seven proposed gold mining operations along the Amargosa. Six of those projects are being proposed by British multinational miner AngloGold Ashanti, including what is potentially the largest greenfield gold discovery in Nevada in more than a decade.”
🟣 Families hope for care closer to home as Nevada’s first standalone children’s hospital breaks ground. KTNV
“Southern Nevada already has children’s hospital services. Intermountain Health leaders said the new facility is intended to expand access to specialized care that some families now leave the state to receive.”
