It was 1947 and the beginning of the Cold War. Tensions between the US and the Soviet Union were at an all-time high, and the fear of foreign threats loomed in the air.
With so many people keeping their heads up, it’s no surprise UFO sightings in Nevada and the US skyrocketed, especially following the alleged crash of an alien craft in Roswell, New Mexico, in July.
Interest in UFOs, or unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), is at a peak once again now that the Pentagon has released the government’s UAP files, spanning 1952 to 2025.
As a hotbed for UAP sightings, Nevada promotes the desolate State Route 375, or Extraterrestrial Highway, as a tourist destination. The 98-mile stretch of road runs parallel to top-secret US Air Force base Area 51, known for its rumored otherworldly tie to Roswell.
There are currently 1,834 open Nevada cases listed on the National UFO Reporting Center website, including 29 for 2026, with mentions of rising discs, domed-shaped objects, color-changing light orbs, oddly moving craft, and other anomalies. And consider this: According to a report by 8 News Now, only 1 in 4,000 sightings are ever reported.
From the existence of aliens, living or dead, at Area 51 to the alleged alien-induced death of a beloved family pet, here are seven of the freakiest UFO sightings in Nevada history.
1. UFO mania (1947)
The summer of 1947 was filled with UFO sightings, but perhaps the most famous was the July 8, 1947, discovery of metallic and rubber debris that crashed in a field in Roswell, New Mexico.
People still debate whether it was a weather balloon or a flying disc recovered in that field, and whether those remains are or were housed at Area 51.
In the month leading up to the Roswell crash, there were 800 mysterious sightings, including a couple in Nevada. A pilot first reported one on June 28 near Lake Mead in Boulder City, Nev. According to a report by 8 News Now’s George Knapp, the pilot witnessed “a tight formation of five or six white, circular objects moving at 285 miles per hour.”
On July 6, Nevadans reported seeing a UFO crash near the historic “S” on the eastern mountain in Sparks. On July 8, the same day as the Roswell incident, there were reports of a “flying disc” in Reno.
2. Neon lights vs. alien life (1957)
According to LVRJ archives, Mary Tidwell reported a freaky UFO sighting above her Las Vegas house near Harry Reid International Airport (then McCarran Field) on Nov. 15, 1957. She claimed the low-flying, whirring, and brightly lit object moved too quickly to be an airplane.
Tidwell wasn’t the only one who saw something strange that night. Two nearby commercial airline pilots also reported a “lighted object” around the same time. Tower controllers for the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA) did not see anything. They suspected what the pilots saw was simply the bright lights of Vegas.
3. Las Vegas fireball mystery (1962)
On April 18, 1962, thousands of people in several US states saw an unknown object traveling by air from Cuba to New York, then headed west. The object was tracked by radar until it erupted into an enormous explosive fireball above the Mesquite Range near Las Vegas.
Although the object was classified as a meteor in the US Air Force’s Project Blue Book, a 2020 8 News Now report notes that those records also show the supposed meteor landing in Utah before taking off and heading to Nevada.
4. Seeing the light (1973)
On Oct. 21, 1973, a “mysterious light” alarmed Sparks residents during the UFO Flap, a wave of freakish UFO sightings.
A Reno Police Sergeant, Harold Thompson, and his wife were among those to witness a strange light with reddish flashes, according to LVRJ archives. Police reports flooded in from the community. The sighting is a mystery to this day.
5. Not-so-lucky dog (1978)
Another tale ripped from the LVRJ archives was a close encounter with “a large, round, brushed-aluminum UFO on tripod legs,” reported on June 11, 1978.
Ray and Cathy Thomas were driving with their dog about 35 miles north of Las Vegas on U.S. Highway 93 when they saw the bluish-tinted, dome-topped aircraft, reporting that the silent object gave them a “strange tingling sensation” and scrambled their watches.
After the three observed the object for about 20 minutes, the humans contacted Nellis Air Force Base, which denied any involvement. Sadly, about 24 hours later, the canine witness passed away unexpectedly.
6. Guess what’s coming to dinner (1989)
Nevada’s Eldorado Canyon is quietly situated along State Route 165, only 50 miles southeast of Las Vegas, 5 miles from Nelson’s Landing, on the Colorado River shore. Known for its photo-friendly, tourable Old West ghost town and mine, as well as its history as a steamboat port, the area may have been invaded by little green men on Dec. 24, 1989.
LVRJ archives show a wave of flying saucer reports in Nelson that year, including repeated sightings of “round, brushed-aluminum flying saucers” either sitting on tripod legs in the canyon or hovering above it.
Residents claimed to have seen small humanoid figures with antennae and dog-like pointed faces. One resident told the LVRJ that some people wanted to shoot the aliens, but she wanted to invite them to dinner.
Another resident spoke of a man visiting Nelson to research the alien reports. He said the man claimed to be a geologist, but later admitted he worked for the US Air Force.
7. Pyrex: It’s not just for cooking (2020)
On the Reddit UFO subreddit, a redditor shares a more recent freaky UFO sighting in Nevada, which occurred while driving from Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas—possibly on the E.T. Highway—on May 5, 2020, between 9 and 10 p.m.
The redditor was riding in the passenger seat when the driver, headed eastbound towards Las Vegas, said, “I just saw a UFO.”
The redditor caught a glimpse a few seconds later, noting, “a saucer-shaped, unidentifiable craft…shaped like a Pyrex pot, with flat, symmetrical sides and a slightly domed belly,” going on to describe it as flashing “orangish-red, seemingly three times. The lights wrapped around it from back to front…When the lights reached the side facing us, it left three vertical black rectangles side by side…like three side-by-side tall black windows.”
The friends felt “equal excitement and blood-chilling horror” at what they saw. “It was all we could talk about in the hotel room that night. It wasn’t the moon; it was not a drone; it wasn’t a reflection; it was a flashing flying saucer.”
