In honor of National Sandwich Month, here are the Top 10 sandwich spots in Reno, according to Yelp.

August is National Sandwich Month, which makes sense since this is also the month when tired parents across the country are cursed yet again with waking up early to make school lunches.

A portable and one-handed food, sandwiches have been a delicacy almost as long as people have been multi-tasking. They really got popular, though, during the 18th century with aristocrats like the Earl of Sandwich.

There are many different kinds of sandwiches, from hoagies to heroes to submarines. Essentially, any concoction of 35% cooked meat and no more than 50% bread is a sandwich, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Since there are plenty of beloved of vegetarian sandwiches (the OG peanut butter and jelly, for instance) that USDA definition seems a little shifty. For the purposes of this article, let’s just define a sandwich as anything edible between two slices of bread.

Nevada’s Biggest Little City is a great place to be if you want to celebrate National Sandwich Month. If you want to make sure your sandwich is the best of the best, read on. Here are the Top 10 spots for sandwiches in Reno, based on Yelp ratings.

10. Deli Town USA – 3.9 Stars

Address: 3650 Lakeside Drive

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it:

Located inside a gas station, Deli Towne USA has a reputation that speaks for itself. The sandwiches are award-winning and highly recommended, and service is quick with ordering done via a kiosk. Choose from sandwiches on a menu or have one customized how you like it. Customers can be assured it will be beautifully prepared.

One Yelper writes that Deli Towne USA will change your definition of a good sandwich: “When I think of sandwiches I automatically think of Deli Towne.”

9. Yosh’s Unique Deli – 4.2 Stars

Address: 85 Foothill Road, Ste. 4

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: Yosh’s Unique Deli is a counter-service cafe that crafts creative, delicious, and elevated sandwiches, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Many guests also appreciate that Yosh’s has a half-sandwich and half-salad or soup combo.

There are more than 10 types of freshly baked house breads for the sandwiches and a bunch of rotating soups. Check out the handwritten menus on the wall for new specials every day. Sides are delicious too, so don’t skip those.

The ambiance here is relaxing and laid back, and the service is efficient. Writes one Yelper: “All in all, one darn good sandwich. What more need be said?”

8. Full Belly Deli – 4.3 Stars

Address: 3064 Mill Street

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: A go-to sandwich spot for locals, the Full Belly Deli also draws tourists as it was featured on an episode of “Diner Drive-Ins and Dives.” The atmosphere, customer service, and staff are top-notch, and don’t forget the fantastic food. Since this place gets busy, customers suggest ordering ahead — though it’s worth the wait if you don’t.

The menu here is huge and so are the sandwiches. Favorites include the Cheesesteak and the Dirka Dirka. In fact, “If the Dirka Dirka was the only thing on the menu, I’d still go,” admits one Yelper.

7. The Sandwich Spot – 4.4 Stars

Address: 6775 Sierra Center Parkway

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: Quick and convenient, with sandwich options for every taste and a build-your-own menu, The Sandwich Spot frequently transforms new customers into repeat customers. The Dutch crunch bread is delicious — soft inside, crunchy outside – and the ingredients are high quality. Since they don’t skimp on the fillings you can easily share their sandwiches.

As one Yelper puts it, “This place is incredible and their bread is on another level. Can’t recommend this place enough.”

6. Michael’s Deli – 4.5 Stars

Address: 628 S. Virginia Street

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: Michael’s Deli is frequently packed but the staff handles the crowd like pros even during busy lunch hours. The deli has a welcoming atmosphere and an old-world feel, including checkered tablecloths. This is the perfect deli if you’re cutting carbs because the menu has a ton of freshly made salads including various green salads, pasta salads, potato salads, and macaroni salads.

Sandwiches are made to perfection on soft and pillowy bread. Even the leftovers are delicious. Customers often return and some have been coming since they were kids. One Yelper went three times in three weeks and “had a great experience every time. I’ve eaten here many times before and had forgotten how good it is!”

5. Pedalers Deli – 4.5 Stars

Address: 6147 Lakeside Drive

Price: $

Why Yelpers love it: Most Pedalers Deli customers wish they had found this place sooner. It’s just that good. There are 14 specialty sandwich options, each crafted with yummy ingredients and housemade bread. Customers can customize any sandwich. The deli also sells homemade ice cream with creative flavors to enjoy there or to-go.

“We’ll be back soon and can’t wait to see the friendly staff again and keep eating our way through the menu,” writes one Yelper.

4. Paisan’s Old World Deli – 4.5 Stars

Address: 6550 Longley Lane, Ste. 110

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: A Reno staple for years, Paisan’s Old World Deli has enormous sandwiches stuffed full of generous fillings, salads, soups, and burritos. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable making customers feel right at home.

In addition to regular bread, there’s a wide variety of gluten-free breads to choose from and customers say they’re all outstanding. The tomato bisque gets several thumbs up and the meatball sub (made with Paisan’s famous meatballs) “was the most perfect sub with the most perfect delivery,” according to a Yelper.

3. The Urban Deli – 4.7 Stars

Address: 7111 S. Virginia Street, Ste. A5

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: Highly recommended by pastrami reuben snobs and sandwich connoisseurs alike, The Urban Deli is a friendly deli in a strip mall. The sandwich choices can be overwhelming but the staff is happy to help you pick the right one.

There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but many customers like to order ahead and take their food to go, noting that the sandwiches don’t get soggy or lose freshness. The sandwiches are so scrumptious they can even convert non-sandwich eaters like this Yelper: “Honestly, I am not a sandwich eater. But this was so good. I’m totally sold on Urban Deli!”

2. Paolo’s Deli – 4.7 Stars

Address: 900 W Moana Lane, Ste. 101

Price: $$

Why Yelpers love it: Eating at Paolos Deli is like eating at someone’s home. Guests are warmly greeted upon arrival and find a perfect balance of love and skill put into their food. The marina is of grandma-made caliber (in other words, high quality).

The menu includes hot and cold sandwiches as well as traditional Italian meals. Among the favorites are the chicken parmesan and Italian meatball subs. Guests often return and always feel extremely welcome, like this Yelper, who wrote, “It truly felt like a family deli.”

1. Eastside Deli – 4.9 Stars

Address: 10068 Hirschdale Road, Truckee

Price: $

Why Yelpers love it: The sandwiches at Eastside Deli are awesome. They’re big and sloppy, and the staff doesn’t skimp on fillings. Also a gift shop and check-in for the neighboring RV park, the deli has lots of cute souvenirs to look at while you wait for your food, like hats, stickers, t-shirts, and teddy bears.

Service here isn’t top of the list for customers but they don’t seem to mind because the sandwiches are so good. One Yelper says you should stop wasting your life on other sandwiches: “I grew up in NYC so I know from deli and I know from pastrami. This sandwich on marbled rye is lights out… there aren’t enough stars for this sandwich.”
