The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas is offering to pay residents $200 from now until Sept. 19 to foster a dog. Here’s what you need to know.
The Animal Foundation is reintroducing an incentive program to help combat overcrowding at its Las Vegas shelter. As of writing, there were nearly 500 dogs at the shelter, with 318 arriving within the last week. Due to the recent influx, The Animal Foundation is seeking help from residents to save these dogs’ lives by providing them a temporary foster home.
The program was announced on Sept. 15, after The Animal Foundation previously stated on Sept. 11 that they were already reaching capacity at the shelter before this latest wave of arrivals.
The goal is to place as many dogs as possible into foster homes for at least a month, which will allow for more space at the shelter. Those who are able to care for an eligible animal for the entire four week period will receive $200 from The Animal Foundation. Payments will be made once the month-long foster period is over, but foster parents will receive all necessary supplies, including food, for free when they pick up their pooch.
What does fostering entail?
Fostering a dog essentially provides them with a temporary home for a designated period, or until a shelter can place the animal with a permanent family. As a caregiver, you’re giving the dog a safe, loving place to live and socialize while providing them with the necessary food, water, and medicine they need to thrive. The shelter takes care of the costs associated with caring for the animal.
Certain restrictions may apply in terms of which dogs you can foster, depending on the type of home you live in, and whether you have children or additional pets. If you’d like to care for one of the dogs at The Animal Foundation, you can speak with someone there directly about which dog will do best in your home during the foster period.
How long does the incentive program run?
The Animal Foundation’s incentive program runs until Friday, Sept. 19. To participate, visit the foster window located inside the shelter’s adoption lobby between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. any day between now and Friday. They’re located at 655 North Mojave Rd. in Las Vegas.
Which dogs are eligible for the month-long foster program?
Any dog that is older than six months and weighs 35 pounds or more is eligible for the month-long foster program. Some of The Animal Foundation’s adoptable animals are listed on its website, which you can view here.
