Hey, Nevadans!
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has identified the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of the season in the 89123 ZIP code.
The Health District is reminding residents to take precautions and “Fight the Bite” to help reduce the impact of mosquitoes in the community by eliminating standing water around their homes, use an FDA-registered insect repellent, and wear protective clothes.
Report mosquito activity to the Health District’s surveillance program at (702) 759-1633. And report green pools to local code enforcement agencies.
According to SNHD, West Nile virus activity in Clark County reached unprecedented levels in the area in 2019, with 43 reported human cases. Activity was minimal in 2021, 2022 and 2023. In 2024, 26 human cases were reported. We’ll keep you updated!
Have a nice Wednesday!

Superior Grocers’ second Las Vegas location can be found on S. Decatur near I-11. (Jannelle Calderón/The Nevadan)

In early 2024, Superior Grocers opened its first store outside of its California base, in North Las Vegas at 1955 N. Nellis Blvd. Now, just over a year later, Superior Grocers has arrived in the West Valley. The new store is located at 352 S. Decatur Blvd., near I-11 (formerly known as US-95).
One customer, María Mejía, said she often tries to shop around to find the best prices and quality products—especially to offset the rising cost of living and to support her taco catering business.
“It’s more opportunities to save money, because that way we have the option to shop here or there—wherever the better deals are. That’s what I do, because I do taco catering for parties, so I go from store to store looking for specials,” Mejía said, adding that the new location is also convenient for her. She hadn’t gone to the Nellis Superior Grocers because it was too far.

Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford launched his bid for Nevada governor and cast himself as a pro-family politician. His speech during his announcement earlier this week at the East Las Vegas Community Center drew applause as labor leaders, union workers, and educators present. Democratic representatives look to him to unseat Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in 2026.

Lake Mead water projections raise red flags: “If reservoir storage continues on its current trajectory, Lake Mead’s water elevation is likely to drop to about 1,038 feet by the end of June 2027 – two feet lower than when it fell to a record low in July 2022, according to a two year forecast released by the federal agency last week.” (Nevada Current)
