Nevada regents approve tuition hikes of up to 12%

The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approved a multi-year tuition and fee increase plan during its Jan. 23 meeting, that officials say is needed to avoid layoffs and service cuts as temporary state funding expires.

The plan is tied to the expiration of state “bridge funding” approved by lawmakers during the 2025 legislative session to help cover ongoing costs tied to cost-of-living raises in 2023 and 2024. That funding ends in 2027.

For UNLV, UNR and Nevada State University, the increases would start at 3% in the 2026-27 academic year, 4% in 2027-28 and 5% in 2028-29. Community college lower-division courses would see smaller increases of 2%, 3% and 4% over the same period.

Rare Nevada toad and fish prompt conservation lawsuit over gold mining: “According to the petitions, both the rare toad and fish are threatened with extinction due to groundwater pumping from seven proposed gold mining operations along the Amargosa. Six of those projects are being proposed by British multinational miner AngloGold Ashanti, including what is potentially the largest greenfield gold discovery in Nevada in more than a decade.” (Nevada Current)
