Hello, Nevadans!

I received my sample ballot for the 2026 primary election in the mail, so you might get yours soon, too (if you haven’t already). It might seem too soon, but early voting for the primaries starts Saturday, May 23, which is just 10 days away. Early voting goes through Friday, June 5, and Election Day is Tuesday, June 9.

There are a few races this year where the primary is high stakes, including the race for the Democratic candidate for governor, where Attorney General Aaron Ford and Washoe Commissioner Alexis Hill are battling it out to see who will go against Gov. Joe Lombardo in November, and the race for the Democratic candidate for attorney general, where Treasurer Zach Conine and state Senator Nicole Cannizzaro are facing each other.

Reno is warming faster than any major US city, according to a new analysis of long-term temperature trends.

The city’s average annual temperature has risen about 7.9 degrees since 1970, the highest increase among 242 cities studied by Climate Central using federal temperature records from 1970 to 2025.

It’s not the first time Reno has topped the list. The city has ranked No. 1 in consecutive analyses since 2022.

Nearly every major US city has warmed over that time, but Reno’s increase is the largest recorded among those analyzed.

“An estimated 27,000 Nevadans were notified they would lose SNAP benefits on May 1 due to the 20-hour work-or-volunteer requirement under H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill … [Alex Cherup, executive director of Nevada Legal Services] encourages affected individuals to reach out to the office, which can help request a hearing and file an appeal, but this must be done within 90 days of the notice.”

“While there is a Nevada law against law enforcement flying drones over private property, a loophole has allowed the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) to massively increase its drone deployments to nation-leading numbers during the past year. The exception permits law enforcement to fly over residents’ property without a warrant in [emergencies.]”

🟣 USPS considers allowing people to ship handguns through the mail. The Associated Press

“Last month USPS proposed a new rule that would allow anyone to mail concealable firearms like pistols and revolvers. USPS currently allows some firearms like long-barreled rifles and shotguns to be mailed, however they must be unloaded and securely packaged. Similar protections would be in place for handguns, which have evolved since 1927.”

🟣 Not just Medicaid: Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill will strain all NV healthcare, lawmakers told. Nevada Current

“More than 147,000 Nevadans on Medicaid are set to be affected by the One Big Beautiful Bill, or H.R. 1, due to new work requirements for adults without children, limits on coverage eligibility for lawful immigrants, and higher co-pays for adults without children that begin Jan. 1, 2027.”
