For the first six decades of the 1900s, Reno was one of the country’s top divorce mills, handling thousands of divorces every year.

The city earned its nickname as “Divorce Capital of the World” due to its lax laws, including a residency requirement of only six weeks, speedy processing, and a divorce-driven tourism industry.

Reno’s early history with migratory divorce had a drastic impact on the city’s culture and economy, as well as the local community, since many people seeking a divorce in Reno never left.

It also played a role in establishing women’s rights, granting them a freedom not afforded in many other places until laws were loosened nationwide.

The Sloan Canyon Conservation and Lateral Pipeline Act, introduced by Nevada Democratic U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, directs the Department of the Interior to grant the Southern Nevada Water Authority rights-of-way for the construction and operation of a 40-mile water pipeline beneath the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area.

The pipeline would have the capacity to carry 375 million gallons of water per day to Henderson and the southern Las Vegas Valley. Members of the state’s congressional delegation say the measure will improve water reliability and protect against future disruptions.

In total, the pipeline is expected to cost between $2 billion and $2.5 billion. It would be funded through infrastructure and commodity charges paid by Southern Nevada Water Authority ratepayers.

“The desert-adapted plant already grows across much of the Mountain West, including Nevada, Idaho, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Scientists say it could help farmers produce renewable fuels like ethanol and biodiesel while using significantly less water than traditional biofuel crops like corn and soybeans.”

🟣 Climber falls 40 feet at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, rescued after 7 hours. Outside

“The climber, whose name has not been released, suffered severe head and back injuries. Their helmet was destroyed in the fall—but officials say it likely saved the victim’s life. The victim’s climbing partner and a guide from another party were able to reach the fallen climber and control their bleeding while waiting for search and rescue personnel.”
