Happy Monday, Nevadans!

Last week, the ACLU of Nevada announced it was suing the state’s DMV after a public records request resulted in “overwhelmingly” redacted emails showing communication between Nevada DMV staff and ICE.

This is significant because in 2023, the Nevada Legislature passed AB407, which prohibits the DMV from releasing any information relating to immigration status, nationality, or citizenship from a file or record for “any purpose relating to the enforcement of immigration laws.”

We’ll be following how that develops.

Sunny days are growing shorter and summer’s colorful wildflowers are fading away, but the arrival of autumn in Northern Nevada is anything but colorless. The diverse geography of the Sierra Nevada mountains and Great Basin desert bursts with tones of red, orange, and gold from September through November.

You won’t have to look far when up north in the Silver State to see vibrant fall color or jump in fluffy leaf piles. From a nature conservation area in the heart of Reno to a national park on the eastern border with Utah, here are some of the best places for leaf peeping in Northern Nevada.

ACLU sues Nevada DMV over apparent collaboration with ICE and lack of transparency

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Nevada has filed a lawsuit against the Nevada DMV for allegedly violating the federal Privacy Act of 1974.

The Act prohibits federal agencies from using personal data in ways they had not disclosed before collecting it—in this case, drivers’ personal information potentially being shared with ICE.

The ACLU of Nevada also called for a state investigation of the DMV after receiving documents that were “overwhelmingly” redacted in response to its records requests.

Nevada will see another year of Colorado River water cuts: “Federal officials announced Friday they would continue water allocation cuts on the Colorado River for the fifth consecutive year following a persistent drought that’s shrunken the river’s largest reservoir.” (Nevada Current)
Federal cuts leave rural Nevada farmers and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe in the cold: “The Nevada Department of Agriculture learned in March that it would no longer receive federal assistance for the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program. The funding went to the state and tribes directly, who then paid small farmers in Nevada to grow produce to supply food banks in the state. Since 2022, Home Feeds Nevada has purchased 3.6 million pounds of food—or 72 semi-truckloads.” (Listen at KUNR )
