I hope our neighbors in Ely are staying safe. Reader Brandon M. shared these images from Ely, one of the Ward Fire currently burning and one of what the valley usually looks like.

The wildfire has so far burned 8,900 acres. As of Sunday, it was 50% contained and nearly 600 personnel are assigned to the effort. According to the US Forest Service-Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, “dry fuels, prolonged drought and isolated thunderstorms continue to create conditions that can support rapid fire growth.”

Fact checking Trump and Lombardo’s claims in Las Vegas visit

Trump called billionaires “incredible people,” and singled out the Fertitta brothers on several occasions. Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who own Station Casinos, are among Gov. Joe Lombardo’s top donors. The governor defended “Trump’s billionaire friends.”

“Quite often, when the press and the media runs him down, they think about, ‘He’s taking care of his billionaire friends,’” Lombardo said. “But those billionaire friends provide jobs. And unless you take care of them, those jobs are absent.”
