Hola, ¡Feliz jueves to everyone!
Even though Giving Tuesday is behind us, quiero compartir some of the amazing organizations and businesses striving to make a difference for persons with disabilities in Southern Nevada.
This Sunday, Dec. 3 is International Day of People with Disabilities, which is a globally recognized observance dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), currently more than 1.3 billion people experience significant disability in the early 2000’s, which is about 16% of the global population. This year’s focus is on “Salud y Bienestar” (Good Health and Well-Being). The WHO joins the UN in observing this day every year to shed light on the importance of securing the rights of people with disabilities, so they can participate fully, equally and effectively in society with others and removing barriers in their lives.
Angela’s House is the only facility specifically designed to offer life skills training, resources, and peer support in Nevada. The house is named after Angela, someone who was born blind in one eye and started to lose vision in her remaining eye and had difficulty finding Las Vegas-based training opportunities to meet her needs in the early 2000’s. Angela’s House is located inside the innovative 14,000 square foot RTC Mobility Training Center and the partnership between RTC and Blindconnect is quite unique in that it’s the only one where a nonprofit agency and a transit agency share facility space to serve the training needs for those with disabilities. ¡Si se puede!
Dig It! Coffee Company is a coffee shop located in the Arts District. Taylor Chaney, the owner and founder of Dig It! was inspired by her little sister Lindsey who was born with Down Syndrome. Her mission is to promote inclusivity and equity by hiring individuals with different abilities, who need the support upon entering the workforce for the first time. Así que, si quieren tomarse un cafecito, Dig It! Coffee is a place para todos.
