Not everyone thinks TikTok has nailed it with this trend, however. Though not as dangerous as eating Tide Pods, Russian manicures are not without risk. Here’s what you should know.
The pros
A Russian, electric file, dry, or e-file manicure is a specialized method using electric drill bits to remove the cuticle entirely. This gives clients a meticulously smooth look and a longer-lasting manicure.
It’s often more expensive than a traditional manicure since it requires special training, a skilled technician, and a longer time commitment.
The cons
The service removes the cuticles, a thin layer of dead skin that protects your nails. The American Academy of Dermatology and other health experts warn that removing them could cause infection and introduce bacteria or fungi into the bloodstream.
Though it is not illegal in Nevada, some states, including California, New York, and Illinois, have laws against removing the cuticle without a medical license.
Some health experts completely oppose the service. Others say to proceed cautiously as long as your provider is licensed, trained, and qualified.
