Bread is an important element in the diets of Latinos. In Mexico, for example, a person courting a potential partner may ask: “What time do you go get the bread?”
It is also said—in a joking way, of course—that it’s often easier to stop consuming a prohibited substance than it is to stop eating sweet bread and coffee.
Bread in the Mexican diet is linked to the Spanish conquest. It was the Europeans who carried out the processes of transforming wheat into bread, with the beginning of the baking industry dating back to 1524.
Currently, the concha is the darling of Latin pastries: It is the star of any Mexican bakery and probably one of the most attractive breads in the world.
In recent years in Nevada, concha has gone from being mostly found only in bakeries located in Hispanic neighborhoods to being a featured item at trendy restaurants and cafes.
Are you craving some freshly baked sweet bread? Here are eight Latin bakeries to find just what you’re looking for.
