A new market opened its doors in the west Las Vegas valley—Superior Grocers celebrated its second location in Nevada last week with free ice cream, music, product samples, and a car raffle.

By 9 a.m., a line of more than a hundred people had already formed, ready to enter the new store.

“This is the kind of turnout we were hoping for, and hopefully it continues throughout the week and beyond. We hope customers like what we offer. We’re very happy to continue growing in Las Vegas,” said Miguel Alarcón, vice president of operations at Superior Grocers.

In early 2024, Superior Grocers opened its first store outside of its California base, in North Las Vegas at 1955 N. Nellis Blvd. Now, just over a year later, Superior Grocers has arrived in the West Valley. The new store is located at 352 S. Decatur Blvd., near I-11 (formerly known as US-95).

Cardenas and Marianas markets are also in the area. Alarcón said this creates healthy competition.

“We look for locations where we think we’ll be able to serve the customer, above all. And wherever we see a good business opportunity,” said Alarcón. “And this one happened to be right across from a competitor. But if it makes sense for our business, that’s where we’ll be.”

One customer, María Mejía, said she agrees and often tries to find the best prices and quality products—especially to offset the rising cost of living and to support her taco catering business.

“It’s more opportunities to save money, because that way we have the option to shop here or there—wherever the better deals are. That’s what I do, because I do taco catering for parties, so I go from store to store looking for specials,” Mejía said, adding that the new location is also convenient for her. She hadn’t gone to the Nellis Superior Grocers because it was too far.

In addition to basic groceries, Superior Grocers offers traditional Mexican candies, tamales, hot dogs, fresh-made tortillas, and aguas frescas to appeal to the target demographic, but also offers Korean and other Asian snacks since the founder of the company is Korean

Established in 1981, the grocery chain currently operates more than 70 stores, mainly in Southern California. Superior Grocers is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in Southern California, with more than 4,500 employees.

According to Alarcón, Superior Grocers plans to open three more locations in Las Vegas in the future. “We want to keep growing here in this city where we know we can serve the community,” he said.
