Hola Nevadenses. Let there be light!

As the fiestas decembrinas arrive, many mental health experts warn that it is also a season where many will suffer from stress and depression. Los recientes acontecimientos dan pauta para ello: the funeral services of the two NHP Troopers who were run over by an alleged impaired driver, the recent shooting that took place at UNLV’s Beam Hall, prematurely taking the lives of three UNLV professors, y recientemente the murder-suicide that took place in the northwest valley taking the lives of two children and both parents, and leaving one child hospitalized. 

The holiday season is usually one for opening our hearts, minds, and wallets to spread alegría y felicidad a los que más lo necesitan.  We’ve recently had many events celebrating the work of algunos trailblazers in the comunidad; the time for Posadas is fast approaching and mucha gente celebró a la Virgen de Guadalupe on Dec. 12.  Many of us are actively tackling our shopping lists, decorando nuestras casas, baking goodies to share with others, or making plans on how we will spend our Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa.  Muchos están tomando viajes o yéndose a cruceros, mientras que otros descansan, quedándose a celebrar en casa.  This is also a time of year where Las Vegas and Reno will receive many folks who come to celebrate the holidays with families and friends.

Después de la masacre del 1 de octubre de 2017, we learned that we are a resilient and close-knit community that comes together in the face of adversity.  Let’s seize every day as an opportunity to realize that we are #RebelStrong and it’s OK to not be OK, but we must seek help to get through challenging times.  Porque son los pequeños gestos y actitudes de nuestro día a día los que nos deben proporcionar un mínimo de alegría y comprensión hacia todos los que nos rodean.  Aquí en The Nevadan/El Nevadense les deseamos a nuestros queridos y estimados lectores unas ¡muy felices fiestas!

La Pastorela es una eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal. Es una representación teatral que para muchos se ha convertido en una tradición decembrina. Es un cuadro escénico cómico, con tintes religiosos que abre espacios para la crítica social y política; varían de acuerdo con los grupos que las representen, pero tienen una trama básica: Narrar las peripecias de un grupo de pastores en su viaje a Belén para adorar al niño Jesús el Día de la Navidad. Katia Zúñiga escenificó “Lo que pasa en Las Vegas se queda en ‘La Pastorela’”.

• La Carne Asada Fries es un platillo mexicano-estadounidense originario de la comunidad chicana. El restaurante Lolita’s en San Diego, afirma haber creado esa delicia culinaria a fines de la década de 1990, inspirado por una sugerencia de su distribuidor de tortillas. El platillo ahora se sirve desde Las Vegas Ballpark y el Allegiant Stadium hasta una infinidad de loncheras (Food Trucks) sobre todo en el este del valle. En 2015, la cadena de comida rápida Del Taco comenzó a vender Carne Asada Fries. (Lee más aquí.)

• Juan de Dios Varela es uno de los artistas plásticos más reconocidos por la comunidad hispana del valle. Tiene muchos años trabajando con el pincel en la mano y promoviendo el arte, así como otras manifestaciones culturales con mucha responsabilidad social. Presentó su libro infantil bilingüe “No Kids No Kidding”, en el Centro Cultural Winchester. (Lee más aquí.)

• Las Vegas mental health service agencies are offering help after UNLV Shooting. Up to 95% of survivors of mass shootings experience PTSD in the aftermath, but supportive services and mental health resources can help improve outcomes for survivors, and resources are available in Las Vegas for those who need them in the wake of the shooting at UNLV shooting on Dec. 6. The Vegas Strong Resiliency Center (VSRC) encourages anyone struggling to deal with the aftermath to reach out for help. (Read more here.)
