Happy Monday, Nevadans!
My name is Samantha! I’m an intern here at The Nevadan, and I am also a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I’m working towards earning my bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies, with a concentration in digital and social media. In the past, I worked as a social media manager, production assistant, and videographer for many different companies and YouTubers.
This internship marks my first time working for a newsroom, so I hope I do good for you guys!
When I’m not working here, I like to spend my free time watching movies, playing video games, reading books, and spending time with my friends. But how am I spending my summer? Summer school. Very helpful, but not fun.
How are you spending your summer? Let us know by replying to this email.
Nice to meet you, and have a great week!

“There are so many Nevada families with children that have rare diseases and their parents are working,” said US Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) during a press call last week. “And they still need to have Medicaid to access the health care they need for their children.”
With Nevada consistently ranking near the bottom nationwide in health care and President Donald Trump’s newly signed “big, beautiful bill,” Nevada health professionals warn that this will not just hurt those who are Medicaid recipients. But it will affect everyone negatively.

Broadacres Marketplace, a well-known swap meet in North Las Vegas, announced it would temporarily shut down “due to ongoing ICE [US Immigration and Customs Enforcement] raids” and the “fear and uncertainty at an all-time high among the immigrant community in Las Vegas.”
Jannelle Calderón spoke to one of these vendors about how, in her 15 years of working at Broadacres as a vendor, she had never imagined having to shut down her booth in fear of immigration enforcement raids and how the income of so many other vendors would have to come to a halt.

Big, Beautiful Bill Act passed, Native American benefits protected: “The federal government agreed in treaties to provide for the health and well being of our people. And most people think that’s through Indian Health, but Indian Health is only funded at $8 billion and the need is upwards to $50 billion to $60 billion dollars. And our reliance on these programs are the federal government’s bandaid to not provide full funding for Indian health.” (KNPR)

Mountain chickadee chatter: Scientists are decoding the songbird’s complex calls: “I can hear them working this out vocally. There’s an unusual variety of complex calls, with melodic ‘gargle calls’ at the forefront, coming from individuals announcing their dominance over other flock members.” (This is Reno)
