In a rare occurrence, Nevada Day observed lands on the same day as the state’s actual 161st birthday. On Friday, Oct. 31, several government offices, recreational areas and businesses will close for the official state holiday.
Though the holiday is on Friday, the Nevada Day parade and related festivities happen Saturday, Nov. 1.
Here’s what’s closed for the holiday, what’s open and how to attend the Nevada Day Parade:
What Washoe County offices are closed on Nevada Day?
- Administrative offices at the Washoe County Complex, 1001 E. Ninth St., Reno
- All Washoe County Library locations (book drops and online services remain available at washoecountylibrary.us)
- Northern Nevada Public Health (clinical, environmental health, birth and death records and WIC services)
- Regional Animal Services shelter operations and offices (field operations continue; pet redemptions available 9 a.m.–3 p.m.)
- Reno, Sparks, Incline Village and Wadsworth justice courts
- Second Judicial District Court
- Washoe County District Attorney’s Office
- Washoe County Sheriff’s Office administrative offices (visiting and cashier remain open; for emergencies call 911 or the non-emergency line at 775-785-9276)
- Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue headquarters, fire prevention and administrative offices, 3663 Barron Way
- Washoe County Human Services Agency and all meal distribution locations
The Washoe County Clerk’s Office at the county complex will remain open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for fictitious firm names, notary bond filings and marriage licenses. Passport services will not be available.
Is Reno City Hall open on Nevada Day?
All city of Reno administrative offices, including City Hall, will be closed Friday, Oct. 31, in observance of Nevada Day.
Are city pools open on Nevada Day?
The Northwest Pool and the Evelyn Mount Community Center Pool will be closed. The Moana Aquatics Facility will be open in the morning but close at noon in observance of the state holiday.
Are schools open on Nevada Day?
Public school students in Washoe County will have the day off on Friday. University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College staff and students will also have the day off.
Are banks open on Nevada Day?
Nevada State Bank is closed on Nevada Day. However, Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase will be open.
Is the DMV open on Nevada Day?
Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed statewide on Friday.
When is the Nevada Day Parade? Where is the Nevada Day Parade?
Nevada Day celebrations will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in Carson City with a hot air balloon launch.
The Nevada Day Parade begins at 10 a.m., featuring more than 200 participants marching through downtown Carson City. The parade is expected to last about four hours.
The World Championship Single-Jack Rock Drill Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. at Carson Mall.
At 2 p.m., or immediately after the parade, the Beard Contest begins at McFadden Plaza.
From 3 to 6 p.m., the Post Parade Celebration takes place in downtown Carson City.
When does daylight saving time end?
Nevada Day partiers are in luck, as daylight saving time ends the day after the parade and celebrations, giving everyone an extra hour of sleep Sunday morning, Nov. 2. Read more about the time change at rgj.com.
