Nevada’s Elko District is offering Christmas tree permits for $5 each until Dec. 24. Here’s how to get one and where to go for harvesting.
As the holiday season approaches, Nevada residents have a unique opportunity to embrace tradition by harvesting their own Christmas trees from public lands. From now until December 24, the Bureau of Land Management’s Elko District Office (EDO) is offering permits that allow families to cut fresh Pinyon Pine and Juniper trees from designated areas across multiple mountain ranges.
Where to get your Christmas tree permit
The permits are available for $5 each at the Elko District office, located at 3900 East Idaho Street, during regular business hours Monday through Friday. For added convenience, permits can also be purchased online through the Forest Products website. Each person can purchase up to 10 permits, and payment can be made via cash, check, or credit card.
Recommended harvesting locations
Tree hunters have several scenic locations to choose from, including:
- Spruce Mountain (east of Ruby Valley)
- Cherry Creek Range (west of Currie)
- Murdock Mountains (west of Montello)
- Dolly Varden Mountain (northeast of Currie)
- Pequop Mountains and Wood Hills (east of Wells)
- Pilot Range (north of Wendover)
- Sugar Loaf Peak (south of the Goshute Mountains)
Important safety guidelines
The EDO emphasizes safety preparation for tree-cutting expeditions. Due to potentially hazardous winter conditions, visitors should equip themselves with:
- Snow tires and chains
- First aid supplies
- Blankets
- Extra food and water
- Emergency equipment
It’s crucial to note that tree cutting is prohibited in wilderness study areas (WSA’s), and permit holders must follow all stipulations provided with their permit. A detailed map of approved cutting areas will be provided with each permit purchase.
Those seeking additional information about Christmas tree permits can contact Matt Murphy at (775) 753-0200.
